Tyrese Rice and Boston College ended the talk of a perfect season for North Carolina on Sunday.
Rice scored 25 points and Rakim Sanders added 22 as the Eagles (13-2, 1-0) won 85-78 over the top-ranked Tar Heels (13-1, 0-1) in an Atlantic Coast Conference game in Chapel Hills, N.C.
Reggie Jackson had 17 points — including seven in the decisive second-half run — for the Eagles, who led by six points at halftime and pushed the lead to as many as 15 before holding off a frantic rally.
"We just met the challenge," Rice said. "I felt like they hadn't been challenged all year. Every team that they've played against, they just walked right through them."
North Carolina had been every bit as dominant as predicted before Sunday, winning its first 13 games by an average of 26 points and breaking a school record for most consecutive double-digit wins, set by the 1993 NCAA championship team. Its closest game was 15 points, its smallest halftime lead was eight and it hadn't trailed in a game later than the 7:08 mark of the first half.
New Hampshire 58, Santa Clara 54: Alvin Abreu scored 28 points, shooting 7 for 7 from three-point range and lifting the Wildcats (4-7) over the Broncos (7-9) in Durham, N.H.
Marc Trasolini scored to get Santa Clara within 52-51 with 1:54 remaining. Tyrece Gibbs hit a jumper for New Hampshire with 1:06 left, and Petty Perry made a free throw for Santa Clara to get within 54-52 with 50 seconds remaining.
But Dane DiLiegro helped ice the victory with a basket to make it 56-52 with 16 seconds left.
Trasolini led the Broncos with 24 points and 10 rebounds.
UCLA 83, Oregon 74: Josh Shipp scored 17 points, including four three-pointers in the second half, to help the 12th-ranked Bruins (12-2, 2-0) defeat the Ducks (6-8, 0-2) in a Pacific-10 Conference game in Eugene, Ore.
Darren Collison had 22 points and nine assists for the Bruins.
Oregon State 62, USC 58: Roeland Schaftenaar's three-pointer with 1.4 seconds left in regulation sent the game into overtime and the Beavers (6-6, 1-1) went on to defeat the Trojans (10-4, 1-1) in overtime in Corvallis, Ore. Oregon State snapped its Pac-10 losing streak at 23 games.
WOMEN Oregon 73, UCLA 56: Taylor Lilley scored 21 points as the Ducks (4-8, 1-1 Pac-10) shot 55.6 percent in upsetting the Bruins (10-3, 1-1) in Los Angeles.
