3 convicted in North Carolina terror trial

NEW BERN, N.C., Oct. 14 (UPI) -- Three North Carolina men have been convicted in federal court on terrorism charges.Omar Aly Hassan, 22, Ziyad Yaghi, 21, and Hysen Sherifi, 24, were found guilty Thursday of providing material support for terrorists.Yaghi and Sherifi were also convicted of conspiring to attack unspecified sites overseas. Hassan was acquitted on the conspiracy charge, the Los Angeles Times reported.The defendants, who are all Muslim, were accused in 2009 of raising money and training with weapons to support a jihadist plot involving eight defendants, the newspaper said. Hassan and Yaghi are U.S. citizens and Sherifi is a native of Kosovo and a legal permanent U.S. resident.The accused ringleader, Daniel Boyd, along with his sons Daniel and Zakariya, who also are from North Carolina, testified for the government in a plea deal. Federal prosecutors did not specific report about alleged targets, except for a potential attack on the U.S. Marine base in Quantico, Va.
